Attorney General Ashcroft stated that, "Identity theft carries a heavy price, both in the damage to individuals whose identities are stolen and the enormous cost to America's businesses.”

Identity theft is one of the most sinister of vulnerabilities consumers can inadvertently be subjected to. Hacker-friendly software, manuals, and processor chips are being promoted on the Internet for the sole purpose of breaking into computers, stealing personal information and selling it to other unscrupulous criminal entities for lucrative profits. Their targeted audience is un-secure VoIP or IM (Instant Messaging) clients.

On January 28, 2005, a press Release issued by the Department of Justice reported that a 19 year old was convicted for his criminal activity by “…creating and unleashing a variant of the MS Blaster computer worm.” Christopher Wray, Attorney General – Criminal Division stated that,

"This … malicious attack on the information superhighway caused an economic and technological disruption that was felt around the world.”

Victims of identity theft readily attest to the nightmarish experience and carnage left behind in its wake - thousands of dollars in personal expense, as well as years to recover, if at all.

Hidden charges, additional charges, etc., should be carefully weighed when locating a VoIP service provider. Typically, the only equipment needed for VoIP is a computer, Internet connection, and microphone (if one is not built into the computer). Normally, calls from PC to PC between subscribers of a VoIP service provider are free. However, calling charges from PC to cell phones or telephones should be indicated prior to making the call, along with client’s permission to grant processing the call at the specified rate.

Dial up capability is another important aspect of VoIP service providers, as 65% of the world still operates on dial up connections. Because VoIP usually involves free PC to PC communication between subscribers, and while one party may have high-speed, individuals on the other end may be part of the 65% still operating on dial up connections. Therefore, VoIP service providers not offering dial up capability limits communication.

Well over 90% of VoIP service providers do not have dial up user capability. When a VoIP service provider incorporates their own proprietary patented technology with dial up capability, this is usually a significant indicator that there have been serious steps taken in its design to provide an optimal VoIP service that meets all customer’s needs.

The smoke screen, or fallacy being propagated, is that high-speed connections are the basic minimum requirement to operate VoIP. Although that limitation may be true for over 90% of VoIP service providers, it is not a fact.

In order for dial up capability to be offered by a VoIP service provider, they must incorporate technology that compresses data packets small enough so that the quality of sound is not compromised as it travels across the Internet. If the VoIP service provider has not invested in securing its own technology to compress data packets for dial up capability, or purchased the technology to incorporate it in their VoIP service, then perhaps a second glance would be warranted.
