Books and Bookmarks

Children's Author Kelly Jones is coming to Santa Cruz on May 21 & 22 to tell stories and involve children in a community art project

(PRWEB) May 15, 2005 -- Children’s Author, Kelly Jones will be coming to the Santa Cruz area on May 21 and 22. She will be a featured author at the Santa Cruz County Family Expo in their Storytime Corner wherehe will be reading her new book, MAMA, and involving the attending children in a community art project.

At the Storytime Corner, Jones will read MAMA and lead a collage making activity in the style of the book. Each child will make a collage to take home with them. Additionally, Jones will be inviting children to come by the Stunt Publishing booth where she will supervise the creation of collage bookmarks. These bookmarks will then be laminated and donated to the school libraries in the area, where they will be displayed and distributed to the student body. The children will be able to choose which of the participating schools their bookmarks will go to. Bookmarks that are not specifically assigned to a school will be randomly distributed to the participating libraries.

Jones urges everybody to come by the Stunt Publishing booth to participate. She believes this program is a way to get children involved in their community and excited about books. “This activity is a lot of fun, and although it seems simple, the children discover that art can be created from scrap, and that a picture is a form of storytelling. The kids are excited to see their artwork displayed and enjoyed by their peers.” Jones also points out that this activity is open to everybody at the Expo, so Moms and Dads can participate as well.

Jones is strongly committed to literacy and reading programs. She recently donated 500 copies of MAMA to First Book National Book Bank, a national nonprofit organization with the mission of providing children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Jones is also a member of California Readers, a non-profit organization created to promote reading within the L.A. Unified School District. Additionally, Jones acts as a volunteer for Star Education, visiting classrooms with her reading and collage activity as part of their literacy enrichment program.

MAMA is Kelly Jones first released title. It is a timeless story of a toddler whose first word is, “mama” so he uses it to say everything. It is up to his big sister to translate. Her insightful observations provide an artful, reminiscent look at life with a little one in the household. The illustrations are bold, colorful collages, filled with humorous detail, adding a complete other dimension to the story. MAMA has been awarded Honorable Mention in the 12th Annual Writer’s Digest Book Awards in the category of Best Children’s and Young Adult Books. It has been recommended by many publications, including the San Luis Obispo Tribune, OC Family, Kids Vermont and Midwest Book Review.

The Santa Cruz County Family Expo is produced by Parent Connection. It will be held at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on May 21 & 22. The Expo was created to offer parents and families a wide variety of local resources and information all in one weekend, at on locations.
